Chester Greenwood

Chester Greenwood is from Farmington, Maine, and is best known as the inventor of the modern earmuff—a simple but ingenious creation that brought warmth to winter ears around the world.

In 1873, at just 15 years old, Chester came up with the idea while ice skating on a cold Maine day. He found traditional wool hats uncomfortable and irritating to his skin, so he asked his grandmother to sew beaver fur pads onto a bent wire frame that would fit snugly over his ears. This handmade prototype was the first version of what he called “Greenwood’s Champion Ear Protectors.”

He received a U.S. patent for his earmuff design in 1877 when he was just 19 years old.
