SUMMARY:COLLOQUY Exhibition: Nature\, Vision\, Expression
DESCRIPTION:Antoinette Prien Schultze and Brigtitte Keller are longtime friends whose artwork forms a rich conversation on abstraction\, process\, material\, natural form\, and modern design. Schultze’s monumental sculptures speak to the resilience of the threatened natural world\, while the deceptively complex\, layered surfaces of Keller’s immersive paintings evoke both the enduring and transient aspects of nature. Both artists’ abstractions are inflected by their deep connections to classical music\, especially Bach. Location: UMF Art Gallery. FREE. Open to the Public. Sponsored by: Division of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences. Contact: Sarah Maline\, 12-4pm daily and by appointment; closed Mondays. Call/text Sarah at 207-778-1062 for appointment; or email. maline@maine.edu. artgalleryumf.org.

SUMMARY:Kenneth Moss\, "Sonos Insectorum" electro-acoustic performance
DESCRIPTION:Human beings have a tendency to center themselves in everything that occurs on Earth. Even scientific hypotheses and theories are subject to anthropocentric bias\, and this is no less evident in how humans interpret insect sounds. In the first part of this program\, Moss will define characteristics of insect sound-making and discuss how those sounds are used by insects and other animals. They will discuss what sounds insects make\, the perceived uses for those sounds\, and how they have impactrd human society. Then\, in the second part\, they will perform an improvised electro-acoustic piece using insect sounds as the source material. Sponsored by the UMF Libra Professors Program. SUMMARY:“Vagrant Birds Seen in Maine”
DESCRIPTION:Finding a bird out of its normal range is always an excitingevent. Birds’ ability to fly sometimes produces jaw-dropping occurrences wellbeyond the normal range of a species. This Western Maine Audubon talk will explore some of the research that has been done to explain vagrancy in birds. Some explanations rely on intentional movements to explore outside the normal range and others involve the effects of storms and faulty navigation. We will consider some of the more amazing vagrants that have occurred in Maine. \nHerb Wilson is a Professor Emeritus of Biology at ColbyCollege where he taught Ornithology\, Evolution and Diversity\, Marine Ecology\,and Marine Invertebrate Zoology. His primary ornithological interests are the impacts of global climate change on bird migration and the foraging behavior ofwinter birds in Maine. \nFor those who cannot attend the talk in person\, it can be accessed live via Zoom. The link for the sign in will be posted online at https://western.maineaudubon.org/events/ and on the Western Maine Audubon Facebook page. Both postings will be available on the day of the talk. A video will also be recorded and posted on the website’s “Video” page. \n \nFREE. Open to the Public. Sponsored by: NASC and the student chapter of The Wildlife Society. Contact: Assoc. Prof. Donelle Schwalm donelle.schwalm@maine.edu.
