SUMMARY:Art Exhibit: The Thinking Hand
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Hours: Wed.-Sat.\, 12pm-4pm \n“The Thinking Hand” presents a broad survey of artworks by local and nationally recognized artists engaging the legacies of craft and the poetics of technique and process as methods of material exploration and storytelling. Celebrating the “by hand” ethos of art-making\, this show includes fiber arts\, woodblock prints\, artist books\, ceramics\, fresco\, sculpture\, drawing\, painting\, stained glass and more. The selection of works features various representations of body and embodiment\, familiar objects presented in new contexts\, and works that harness the metaphorical power of unconventional materials. Many of the artworks explore the rituals of labor-intensive processes as meditations on nature\, time\, domestic culture and personal narrative\, while others engage new approaches to traditional techniques as a language for social and environmental activism. Location: Emery Community Arts Center. FREE. Open to the Public. SUMMARY:Opening reception and artists' talk: “COLLOQUY”
DESCRIPTION:Opening reception for COLLOQUY: Nature\, Vision\, Expression\, 4-7pm. Artists’ talk and Q&A: 5:30pm. \nAntoinette Prien Schultze and Brigtitte Keller are longtime friends and abstractionists whose artwork forms a rich conversation on process\, material\, natural form\, and modern design. Schultze’s monumental sculptures speak to the resilience of the threatened natural world\, while the deceptively complex\, layered surfaces of Keller’s immersive paintings evoke both the enduring and transient aspects of nature. Both artists’ abstractions are inflected by their deep connections to classical music\, especially Bach. Location: UMF Art Gallery. FREE. Open to the Public. Sponsored by: Division of Arts\, Humanities\, and Social Sciences. Contact: Sarah Maline\, 207-778-1062\, maline@maine.edu. artgalleryumf.org.
